1933 R319 Goudey Near-Complete Set (237/240)

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $15,405.00

Extremely attractive original-owner near-complete set of 1933 Goudey Gum containing 237 of the 240 cards. This collection is missing only #106 Lajoie,144 Ruth, and 207 Ott for completion. Amazingly, this set came to us with a #144 Ruth that we had no choice but to remove from this lot as it was signed by Babe Ruth! Signed Ruth gum cards are especially rare and desirable, and that card is offered as a separate lot in this auction. This set has been consigned directly from the family of the gentleman who personally collected these cards as a child growing up in New York City. The near-complete set is highlighted by an incredible fifty-eight Hall of Famers, including three of the four Babe Ruths and both Lou Gehrigs. The 1933 Goudey set is universally recognized as the single most popular and collected of all 1930s gum issues, and one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. This set is very attractive, beautifully preserved over the years, with bold colors throughout, but is technically low-grade as three-quarters of the cards have a small mark in pen or pencil in the corner on the reverse. The key cards are graded below with any marks noted but not factored in to the technical grade. We have selected six cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 Bengough (Gd+), 2 Vance (Pr/Fr), 5 Herman (Fr, pencil), 7 Lyons (Gd, pen), 19 Dickey (Vg-Ex, pencil), 20 Terry (Vg-Ex, pen), 22 Traynor (Fr, pen), 23 Cuyler (Vg, pencil), 25 Waner (Gd, pencil), 29 Foxx (Fr, pen), 31 Lazzeri (Vg, pencil), 35 Simmons (Gd, pencil), 42 Collins (Vg-Ex, pencil), 44 Bottomley (Vg-Ex, pencil), 47 Manush (Vg, pencil), 49 Frisch (Vg+, pencil), 53 Ruth (SGC GOOD 30, appears Vg-Ex from front, light surface crease and pencil mark on reverse), 56 Ruffing (Ex, pencil), 58 O'Doul (Vg, pen), 60 Hoyt (Vg, pencil), 63 Cronin (Ex, pencil), 64 Grimes (Vg+, pencil), 73 Haines (Vg-Ex), 74 Rixey (Vg+, pen), 76 Cochrane (Vg-Ex, pencil), 79 Faber (Vg-Ex, pencil), 89 Speaker (Vg, pen), 92 Gehrig (Pr, borders colored in marker), 102 Jackson (Vg, pen), 103 Combs (Vg+, pencil), 107 Manush (Vg), 109 Cronin (Pr), 110 Goslin (Vg-Ex), 117 Maranville (Pr), 119 Hornsby (Vg, pencil), 125 Terry (Gd), 127 Ott (Vg-Ex), 128 Klein (Vg-Ex+), 133 Lindstrom (Vg-Ex, pencil), 134 Rice (Vg-Ex, pencil), 138 Pennock (Vg+, pencil), 147 Durocher (Ex, pencil), 149 Ruth (SGC GOOD 30, appears Vg to Vg-Ex from the front, centered towards the bottom, very faint surface wrinkling and pen mark on reverse), 154 Foxx (Vg, pen), 158 Berg (Vg, pen), 160 Gehrig (Pr, borders colored in marker), 164 Waner (Fr, pen), 165 Sewell (Vg, pen), 168 Goslin (Ex, pen), 181 Ruth (SGC GOOD 30, appears Vg-Ex front front, small pen mark on reverse), 187 Manush (Vg, pen), 188 Hornsby (Vg, pen), 189 Cronin (Vg-Ex, pen), 194 Averill (Vg+, pen), 197 Ferrell (Gd), 202 Hartnett (SGC VG/EX+ 55), 211 Wilson (Vg-Ex, pen), 216 Gomez (Vg), 220 Grove (SGC VG/EX+ 55), 222 Gehringer (SGC EX 60), 223 Dean (Vg), 229 Vaughan (Ex), 230 Hubbell (Vg), 234 Hubbell (Ex), and 240 Schumacher (Gd). The balance of the set presents in condition ranging from Vg to Ex with approximately 10% lesser. Consistent with the key cards, however, all but forty-three commons have the pen or pencil notations on reverse, rendering the majority of the set technically Fr to Gd. This is an ideal near-set for a collector looking to obtain very pleasing examples of these classic cards without having to spend a fortune. This near-complete set of 237 different 1933 Goudeys (missing only three cards including #106 Lajoie) has many highlights and is an extremely attractive collection of this classic 1930s gum-card issue. The equivalent SMR value of just the six graded cards (not including the 231 ungraded cards) is $4,590. Total: 237 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $15,405.00
