1930s Baseball Gum Card Collection (9) Including R337 Eclipse Import Babe Ruth

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,659.00

Collection of nine cards, including eight Hall of Famers, from three different 1930s gum-card issues, highlighted by a 1933 Eclipse Import Babe Ruth graded SGC GOOD 30. 1-2) 1933 R337 Eclipse Import (2 cards): #402 Ruth (SGC GOOD 30). Extremely attractive card featuring a crisp image of Babe Ruth, with brilliant colors, evenly rounded corners, a lower right corner crease, and centered towards the bottom. The reverse is perfectly clean. This is the key card from one of the most unusual and scarce "R" card issues of the early 1930s and is one of Ruth's most distinctive and interesting cards. The second R337 Eclipse card included is #408 Lefty Grove (Gd). R337s were issued in eight-card strips. Each card features a primitive, in most cases barely recognizable, full-color artwork of the player on the front. For some reason, perhaps because of their rarity and the poor quality of the artwork, the set has always held a special place in the hearts of serious collectors. The Ruth card, in particular, has always been a favorite. The artwork on this card is based upon a very well known photograph of Ruth, the same photo that appears on his R317 Uncle Jack's gum card. 3) 1934-1936 R318 Batter-Up (1 card): #126 Rick Ferrell (Vg). 4-9) 1934-1936 R327 Diamond Stars (6 cards): #26 Pepper Martin (1935, Vg-Ex), 44 Rogers Hornsby (1935, Fr), 50 Mel Ott (1935, Vg-Ex), 74 Tony Lazzeri (1936, Gd), 91 Bucky Harris (1936, Pr), and 99 Pie Traynor (1936, Fr). This small group features 1930s baseball cards from some the most popular, as well as one of the most obscure, sets of the era. Total: 9 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,659.00
