1933 R337 Eclipse Import SGC-Graded Complete Set (24) Including Ruth
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,258.75
Offered is a very rarely seen complete set of all twenty-four different cards in the R337 set, all SGC-graded, and highlighted by ten Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth. This is only the second complete R337 set we can ever recall offering. One of the most distinctive and unusual card issues of the early 1930s, R337s were issued in eight-card strips. Each card features a primitive, in some cases barely recognizable, full-color artwork of the player on the front. For some reason, perhaps a combination of their rarity and unusual artwork, the set has always held a special appeal and charm for serious collectors. There is no question that they certainly are different! They are also quite rare, far more so than standard 1930s sets such as those issued by National Chicle and Goudey. The Ruth card, in particular, has always been a favorite with collectors, has sold at auction for thousands, and is something of an unlikely classic among 1930s cards. The cards in this collection are in very consistent grade, with bold colors and eye-appeal the hallmarks of even the examples in the lowest technical grades. SGC grading composite: EX 60 (2 cards): #421 P. Waner and 422. VG/EX 50 (6 cards): #407, 412, 417, 424, Traynor, and R. Johnson. VG 40 (10 cards): #402 Ruth (very attractive example with only minor wrinkling and centering affecting the grade), 405 Terry, 406, 408 Grove, 409, 411, 416 Manush, 418 Herman, 419 Frisch, and 420 Lazzeri. GOOD 30 (2 cards): #404 and 423. FAIR 20 (1 card): #415 Simmons. POOR 10 (2 cards): #401 and 410. Authentic (1 card): Foxx. This is a tremendous complete set of one of the most distinctive and interesting of all 1930s issues, with (for this set) a particularly strong example of key card Babe Ruth. Total: 24 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++.
