1928 F50 Yuengling's Ice Cream Near-Complete Graded Set (52/60)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,666.25

Rarely offered near-complete (52 of 60) set of 1928 F50 Yuengling's Ice Cream cards, including an incredible twenty-five Hall of Famers. Missing just eight cards for completion (#6 Ruth, 10 Sewell, 26 Gehrig, 27 Cobb, 30 Hoyt, 48, 54 Sisler, and 59). Yuengling's Ice Cream cards are one of the few issues of the late 1920s and are very rarely seen in near-set form. All but one of the fifty-two cards are graded and encapsulated (thirty-three PSA and eighteen SGC). Two cards grade Ex-Mt, three Ex, one Vg-Ex+, three Vg-Ex, eleven Vg, two Good+, twelve Good, twelve Fair, three Poor, and two Authentic. PSA condition report (33 cards): One EX-MT 6: #50 Frisch. One EX 5: #13 Hornsby. One VG-EX+ 4.5: #52. One VG-EX 4: #15. Four VG 3: #12, 14 Traynor, 40, and 41. Two GOOD+ 2.5: #17 and 37. Seven GOOD 2: #1 Grimes, 4 Faber, 7, 23 Schalk, 25 Wilson, 34, and 55. Eleven FR 1.5: #5 Hartnett, 11, 18 Luque, 20 Kelly, 29 Lazzeri (MC), 31, 38, 42 McGraw, 45 P. Waner, 49 Goslin, and 60. Three POOR 1: #2, 32 Carey, and 56. Two Authentic: #16 Rixey and 57 Coveleski. SGC condition report (18 cards): One EX/NM 80: #53 Roush. Two EX 60: #8 Pennock and 24. Two VG/EX 50: #3 and 21 Combs. Seven VG 40: #9, 22 Heilmann, 28 Speaker, 35, 43, 44 Alexander, and 58. Five GOOD 30: #19 Bancroft, 33, 46 Terry, 47, and 51. One FAIR 20: #36 Rice. Ungraded (1 card): #39 (poor). The Yuengling's Ice Cream set is identical in design to several other contemporary sets (Harrington's, Tharp’s, Sweetman, etc.), but with advertising for Yuengling's Ice Cream on the reverse. The modest production quality of most cards in this era (being black-and-white as opposed to the color bubble-gum cards issued in the 1930s) have kept these 1920s classics relatively affordable. Their rarity, the inclusion of so many Hall of Famers, the fact that there are so few quality issues dating from the 1920s, and the excellent value they represent have earned them a growing appreciation among advanced collectors in recent years. Yuengling's is one of the most substantial sets of the late 1920s. This is an exceptional near-complete set of these distinctive and rare 1920s cards. Total: 52 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
