1928 W502 SGC-Graded Complete Set (60)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,443.75

Presented is a complete sixty-card set of W502 "Game Backs" strip cards. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by SGC. While little is known about the W502 set with respect to its precise method of distribution, the cards can clearly be used to play a baseball card game (various game "plays" are listed on the reverse of each) and were very likely produced as a promotional vehicle for merchants. This set very closely resembles several other issues from the same time period, including the Yuengling's, Tharp's, and Harrington's ice-cream sets. These sets from the late 1920s are well known for their incredible representation of Hall of Famers. The W502 set features a remarkable thirty-three Hall of Famers, including the key cards of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Ty Cobb. SGC grading composite: NM 84 (4 cards): #22 Heilmann (HOF), 31, 38, and 53 Roush (HOF). EX/NM 80 (1 card): #23 Schalk (HOF). EX+ 70 (3 cards): #13 Hornsby (HOF), 18, and 46 Terry (HOF). EX 60 (13 cards): #3, 4 Faber (HOF), 8 Pennock (HOF), 9, 15, 19 Bancroft (HOF), 25 Wilson (HOF), 26 Gehrig (HOF), 37, 43, 49 Goslin (HOF), 50 Frisch (HOF), and 51. VG/EX 50 (5 cards): #6 Ruth (HOF), 7, 10 Sewell (HOF), 34, and 42 McGraw (HOF). VG 40 (8 cards): #2, 11, 30 Hoyt (HOF), 33, 35, 40, 41 Harris (HOF), and 52. GOOD 30 (6 cards): #12, 14 Traynor (HOF), 36 Rice (HOF), 47, 48, and 54 Sisler (HOF). FAIR 20 (6 cards): #5 Hartnett (HOF), 24, 28 Speaker (HOF), 29 Lazzeri (HOF), 39, and 55. Authentic (14 cards): #1 Grimes (HOF), 16 Rixey (HOF), 17, 20 Kelly (HOF), 21 Combs (HOF), 27 Cobb (HOF), 32 Carey (HOF), 44 Alexander (HOF), 45 P. Waner (HOF), 56, 57 Coveleskie (HOF), 58, 59 L. Waner (HOF), and 60. The fourteen "Authentic" cards are encapsulated as such due to natural irregular cuts or dimensions under the minimum size requirement. Each card presents at an otherwise EX level with the exception of Cobb and Peckinpaugh, which each have small areas of paper loss on the front. W502s are found with several different backs. Twenty-two cards in this set have a single line of text printed on the reverse while the balance have two or more lines of text on the reverse. This issue represents a tremendous value due to the inclusion of so many Hall of Famers and the fact that there are so few quality issues dating from the 1920s. This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a rarely offered complete set of this distinctive and classic 1920s issue. Total: 60 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $4,443.75
