1922 E121 American Caramel "Series of 120" PSA-Graded Complete Set Minus 1 (124/125)
Starting Bid - $10,000.00, Sold For - $20,145.00
Presented is an extremely attractive high-quality complete set (missing only one card) of E121 "Series of 120" American Caramel. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. This set boasts an impressive average grade of 3.56 and is ranked second on the PSA Set Registry. There are no complete sets registered, so this set (missing only Whitted/Brooklyn for completion) is literally knocking on the door of being the first to reach that significant milestone. As any advanced collector will confirm, an E121 set does not just pop up or put itself together in complete set form. This is a set that has to be assembled, card-by-card, and only a handful of collectors have ever gotten this close. The E121 American Caramel set is noted for its strong representation of Hall of Famers. The set includes thirty-five cards featuring Hall of Famers. Several are featured on more than one card, and Babe Ruth, without question the biggest star of the day, has three different cards in the set. The three Ruth cards in the offered set are among the highest-graded cards in the collection, as well as in the overall population, as one is the highest-graded example in the PSA Population Report and the two others are exceeded by only two examples each. In addition, this set includes almost twenty percent of the known population of E121 Series of 120 cards graded EX or better. This is a tremendous set and an astounding collecting achievement, both for its completeness and for its quality. PSA grading composite: PSA NM-MT 8 (1 card): Ward. PSA NM 7 (1 card): Hoyt (HOF, highest graded). PSA EX-MT 6 (1 card): Veach. PSA EX 5 (16 cards): Bagby, Cobb/Bat (HOF), Cooper, Doak, Douglas, Faber (HOF), Fewster, Graney, Hollocher, Hooper (HOF), O. Miller, Nehf, Ruether, Babe Ruth/Ball (HOF, only one higher), Babe Ruth/Bird (HOF), and Schang. PSA VG-EX+ 4.5 (5 cards): Collins (HOF), Mostil, O’Neill, Vitt, and Walker. PSA VG-EX 4 (40 cards): Adams, Alexander (HOF), Barber, Bush, Coveleski (HOF), Dauss, Devormer, Falk, Frisch (HOF), Glazner, Grimm, Groh, Haines (HOF), Hodge, Hornsby/O.F. (HOF), Huggins (HOF), Johnson (HOF), Kelly (HOF), Kerr, Kilduff, Killifer/Throw, Maranville (HOF), Martin, Mays (MK), McInnis (MK), Meusel, Milan, E. Miller, Neale, Nunamaker, Pratt, Rixey (HOF), Rommel, Babe Ruth/Montage (HOF), Ryan, Schalk/Catch (HOF), Sheely, Speaker/Small (HOF), Strunk, and Whitted/Pitt. PSA VG+ 3.5 (9 cards): Carey (HOF, highest graded), Gardner, Gaston, Harper, Scott, Shea, Shocker, Ea. Smith, and Snyder. PSA VG 3 (29 cards): Bancroft (HOF), L. Bigbee, Causey, Cobb/Throw (HOF), Danforth, Daubert, Davis, Flagstead, Gharrity, Heilmann (HOF), Mails, McGraw (HOF), McNally, Mulligan, Myers, Rogers, Roush (HOF), Ruel, Sewell (HOF), Sisler/Bat (HOF), El. Smith, Southworth (HOF), Stock, Terry, Toney, Toporcer, Wambsganss, Wheat (HOF), and Williams. PSA GOOD+ 2.5 (6 cards): Holke/Port., Judge, Lavan, Oeschger, Schalk/Bat (HOF), and Shawkey. PSA GOOD 2 (13 cards): C. Bigbee, Flack, Gibson, Gleason, Gowdy, Griffith, Meusel, Rawlings/2B, Rawlings/Utl., Rice (HOF), Rounnel, Wingo, and Youngs (HOF). PSA POOR 1 (2 cards): Hornsby/2B (HOF) and Robinson (HOF). PSA Authentic (1 card): Killifer/Bat. Complete sets of this issue are very rarely offered. This set would be a significant addition to any world-class vintage collection and includes numerous cards that would be important highlights in many different types of prewar-card collections. The total SMR value (which we think is conservative in this case compared to the selling prices of individual cards) for this set is $19,640 (which does not include the two qualified cards, the one Authentic, and calculates the twenty half-grades at lower whole-grade SMR values). Total: 124 cards. Reserve $10,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $20,145.00
