1922 E120 American Caramel PSA-Graded Complete Set Minus 1 (239/240)
Starting Bid - $10,000.00, Sold For - $26,662.50
Presented is a complete set of 1922 E120 American Caramel cards missing only one card (Daubert) for completion and highlighted by extremely high grade examples of Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson. The E120 American Caramel Company set issued in 1922 is universally recognized as the most classic set from the 1920s. The E120 set’s 240 cards make it the only comprehensive set of the era and its striking design makes it one of the most attractive baseball-card sets of any era. The set features fifteen members from each of the sixteen Major League teams. All the players are pictured in full-length poses. The National Leaguers are printed in a green tone; the American Leaguers are printed in a sepia tone. All 239 cards presented here have been graded and encapsulated by PSA. This set ranks second on the PSA Set Registry Current Finest list with an impressive GPA of 3.97. This set boasts nearly one-half of the known population graded Ex or better, including a stunning Babe Ruth PSA 5.5 EX+, which is only exceeded by two cards. This is the first completely graded set of 1922 E120 American Caramel that we have ever offered and one of the few times that such a large assembly has been brought to market. This is an impressive set built and upgraded by an extremely dedicated collector over a period of years. PSA condition composite: NM-MT 8 (1 card): Goslin (HOF, highest graded). NM 7 (3 cards): Kopff, Tobin, and Cl. Walker. EX-MT 6 (12 cards): Cooper, Duncan, Fletcher, Gillespie (MK), Graney, Luque (MK), Maranville (HOF), Ed. Miller, Neale, Oeschger, Olson, and Pinelli. E120s are almost never found in set or even near-set form. They could only be collected one card at a time by buying packs of American Caramel. They were never offered by the company as complete sets, and with 240 cards, collecting a complete set was a great challenge even in 1922. Assembling a set today is an even greater challenge and might be considered somewhat impractical by most collectors. The SMR value for this set (which we think is conservative in this case compared to selling prices of individual cards) exceeds $20,000 (note: the eleven qualified cards have not been included at all in this total, and twenty-one half-graded cards—including Ruth—have been calculated at the lower whole grade). This is an extremely rare and significant opportunity to acquire one of the finest complete sets (missing only one common card) ever assembled of this all-time classic 1920s baseball-card issue. Total: 239 cards. Reserve $10,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $26,662.50
