1887 H891 Tobin Litho Trade Card Complete SGC-Graded Set (10)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,555.00

Tobin Lithographers of New York issued this colorful set of ten baseball trade cards in 1887. Offered is a complete set of this unusual nineteenth-century baseball issue, entirely graded and encapsulated by SGC. This is a beautiful set! The set consists of the following cards: Andrews (VG/EX 50), Cap Anson (GOOD 30; presents Vg/Vg-Ex, downgraded due to glue residue on reverse), Dan Brouthers (EX 60), Ferguson (EX 60), Glasscock (VG/EX 50), Hines (VG/EX 50), Tim Keefe (VG 40), Mike Kelly (VG/EX 50), McCormick (VG 40), and Smiling Mickey Welch (GOOD 30; presents Vg-Ex, downgraded due to glue residue on reverse). Each card features a caricature of a Major League baseball player with an amusing slogan and the player's name below. These cards were designed to allow merchants to overprint their own ads on the front or blank backs, for use as an advertising vehicle. Of the ten cards in this set, six cards (Andrews, Anson, Brouthers, Hines, Keefe, and McCormick) are without advertising, while the remaining four cards (Ferguson, Glasscock, Kelly, and Welch) each have different advertising on their reverses. This is a very impressive looking set of this very rare, distinctive, and attractive nineteenth-century issue. Total: 10 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $3,555.00
