1919-1921 W514 PSA-Graded Collection (34) Including Ty Cobb PSA EX-MT 6
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $6,517.50
Extremely high grade collection of thirty-four different cards from the W514 strip-card series, highlighted by six Hall of Famers including Ty Cobb. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. Many of the cards included in this collection are the highest graded examples. The W514 set is the largest and most widely collected of the various "strip card" issues of the era. The popularity of this 120-card set is driven by the fact that it includes an incredible twenty-six Hall of Famers plus seven of the eight Chicago "Black Sox," who were banned from baseball for their alleged role in throwing the 1919 World Series, and is highlighted by the only strip-card appearance of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. This is an exceptionally strong group of cards from this set in uncompromising high-grade. PSA grading composite: Two NM-MT+ 8.5: #74 and 108. Twelve NM-MT 8: #11, 13, 22 Carey (HOF), 36, 61, 63, 64 Hooper (HOF), 67, 79 Rice (HOF), 86, 89, and 100. All highest graded except for #67 (one higher). Eight NM 7: #65 Alexander (HOF), 73, 76, 78, 80 (highest graded), 84, 92, and 97. One EX-MT 6: #43 Cobb (HOF). Three EX 5: #39, 55, and 107. One VG-EX 4: #71. One VG 3: #57. Six Authentic: #113 Stengel (HOF), 114 Chase, 115, 116, 117, and 119. Strip cards, of course, are by definition hand-cut, as intended, and are therefore often encapsulated by the third-party grading companies as "Authentic" due to the cuts affecting a small portion of the cutting guidelines. The six "Authentic" cards in this collection all present as Vg-Ex to Ex but are irregularly cut. This is an outstanding ultra high-grade collection of cards from this classic 1920s issue which represents one of the best values in vintage-card collecting and is one of the most important and comprehensive sets of the era. Total: 34 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $6,517.50
