1923 V117 Maple Crispette Near-Complete SGC-Graded Set (26/30)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,133.00

Rarely offered near-complete set of 1923 V117 Maple Crispettes, including 26 of the 30 cards comprising this rare Canadian candy issue, highlighted by Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson. Missing #8 Ruth, 9 Dolan, 15 Stengel (a virtually impossible rarity in the V117 set), and 19 Bottomley for completion. All but four cards have been graded by SGC. SGC grading composite: VG 40 (1 card): #10. GOOD 30 (13 cards): #3 Schalk, 4 Collins, 5, 6, 11, 12 Sewell, 17, 18, 21, 23, 24, 26, and 29. FAIR 20 (8 cards): #2 Traynor, 13, 14, 16, 20, 27 Pennock, 28 Roush, and 30 Johnson. POOR 10 (3 cards): #7 Hoyt, 22 Cobb, and 25. Ungraded (1 card): #1 Barnes (trimmed). Also included are three Hall of Fame duplicates: #12 Sewell (Gd, possible trim), 27 Pennock (Pr), and 28 Roush (Vg). According to the backs, a complete set of 30 cards could be redeemed by mail for valuable prizes (gloves, bats, balls, etc.). This issue was long thought to be complete at twenty-nine cards until a discovery in the early 1990s of card #15 Stengel, which was obviously short printed to limit Maple Crispettes’ exposure to the prize redemption offer and possibly also to encourage more sales. A seldom-seen collection of 26 of the 30 cards, plus three duplicates, of this rare issue, which includes some of the most difficult-to-find cards of many great Hall of Famers. Total: 29 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,133.00
