1921 Frederick Foto PCL Collection (48)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $8,295.00

Collection of forty-six different (plus two duplicates) 1921 Frederick Foto Service cards. This is an extremely rare set! Frederick Foto Service cards (1-3/4 x 3-11/16 inches) feature black-and-white photos on slick card stock, with the player's name, team, and the company (Frederick Foto) printed in black. Issued by the Sacramento-based Frederick Foto photography studio, this rare set is comprised of players from both the minor and Major Leagues. The extreme rarity of this issue is obviously a result of its regional distribution. It is unknown exactly how these cards were distributed. This group was consigned directly by the family of the original collector, and to our knowledge, this is the largest accumulation of Frederick Fotos ever to be presented at auction. The key to the set, Babe Ruth, is offered individually in this auction. The collection is comprised of the following: Agnew, Cady, Canfield/follow-through (not checklisted), Canfield/hands at chest (not checklisted), Cook/batting (x2), Cook/fielding, Eldred, Elliott, Ellison (not checklisted), Faeth, Fittery, Gedeon, Kopp/bat waist level, Kuntz, Locker (not checklisted), Mails/arms at side, Mails/follow-through, Mails/hands at chest, Mails/wind-up, McGaffigan/fielding, McGaffigan/bat at waist, Middleton, Miller, Mollwitz, Niehaus, Orr/batting, Orr/hands on knees, Penner/foot off ground, Pick, Pinelli, Prough, Read, Reuther (x2), Rodgers, Rose, Ryan/full-length, Ryan/three-quarters, Ryan/swinging, Schang, Shea (not checklisted), Sheehan, Shore, Tobin, Vaughn (not checklisted), Wirts/Dallas, and Yelle. Several of the players in this group went on to play in the Major Leagues. Each Frederick Foto card is very much like a miniature photograph rather than a traditional baseball card. All are bright and crisp with outstanding image clarity. Condition ranges from Poor to Excellent with variations in size or writing present on the reverse of thirty-five cards. This is a very attractive and extremely substantial collection of these unusual PCL rarities from the early 1920s. Total: 48 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $8,295.00
