1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy #147 Babe Ruth - Highest Graded!
Starting Bid - $10,000.00, Sold For - $65,175.00
Graded VG-EX+ 4.5 by PSA. Highest-graded example by PSA! Presented is an extraordinary example of Babe Ruth from the 1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy set. By any measure, this is one of Babe Ruth's most significant and rarest cards. In our opinion, it is also one of the most overlooked of all vintage cards deserving of iconic-card status. The reason this card has never quite gotten the attention it deserves is simply because it is so rare. It is one of the premier early Ruth cards and one of the very few dating from the beginning of his legendary career. 1917 Collins-McCarthy candy cards are one of the few major card issues dating from the mid-teens. They are somewhat similar in design to the M101-4/5 Sporting News cards, are from the same general era, and also have 200 cards in the set. Because Ruth appears in the M101-4/5 sets, these sets predate E135 by one year, and these issues are so much more common than E135, the attention received by E135 Ruth has been overshadowed by the M101-4/5 Ruth. E135 Collins-McCarthy cards, however, are considerably rarer. In addition, they were never issued as complete sets to the public. E135s are usually encountered only in small groups and usually in low grade. They were also produced on a slightly thinner stock (compared to M101-4/5) that is far more susceptible to wear, and with a very glossy surface, which is very prone to creasing. The offered card is bright and crisp, with outstanding picture quality, extremely light corner wear, no creases, and very well centered. The card has a Ex-Mt appearance, but is technically VG-EX+ due to a tiny wrinkle on the lower right corner. The reverse is also perfectly clean with bold black text. This is an exceptional high-grade example of one of Babe Ruth’s most elusive and important cards dating from very early in Ruth's career. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $25,000++. SOLD FOR $65,175.00
