1916 M101-5 Sporting News #151 Babe Ruth Rookie - Famous and Barr Back
Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $35,550.00
Graded POOR 10 by SGC. Rare M101-5 variety of #151 Babe Ruth rookie with Famous and Barr advertising reverse. The 1916 Famous and Barr set is identical in design to M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News, but with advertising on the reverse for the "The Boys’ Clothes Store of St. Louis - Famous and Barr Co. – St. Louis Foremost Boys’ Clothes Store." The St. Louis-based Famous and Barr Company was one of several regional advertisers to issue both the M101-4 and M101-5 series cards, and almost all Famous and Barr examples known are M101-5s. The significant rarity of this card is confirmed by the fact that only five Famous and Barr Babe Ruth cards (including this one) have ever been graded by PSA and SGC combined! Three are graded by PSA and two by SGC (one example, which REA sold in 2005, is listed under 1915, not 1916, and does not show up on the population report for this set, but we know it exists). This iconic card features Babe Ruth in his pitching follow-through as it was issued years before Ruth established himself as a power-hitting outfielder with cards most frequently displaying him in batting pose. This is a very attractive card that, as can easily be seen, displays far better than suggested by its technical grade. The card is very well centered with light, even wear to the corners consistent with a Vg example. A single, horizontal crease is present on the front but does not fully break through to the reverse. Two tiny, unobtrusive pinholes are also barely visible, one on each the top and bottom border. The reverse advertisement for Famous and Barr Co. is bold and crisp with a hint of light staining and general wear/soiling present. This is a very desirable example of an extreme rarity and would be a significant addition to any world-class Babe Ruth or rare vintage baseball-card collection. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000++.
