1915 E145 Cracker Jack #88 Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,555.00

Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. Stunning high-grade example of Christy Mathewson from the 1915 Cracker Jack series. This has always been one of Mathewson’s most striking and popular cards. 1915 Cracker Jacks will always be one of the most highly prized and widely collected of all prewar sets. Mathewson is one of the key cards in the set, along with Cobb, Jackson, Johnson, and Wagner. The offered card is outstanding in all respects. Bright, crisp, and perfectly fresh, with flawless color, perfect registration, and four square corners (showing just the slightest hint of wear at the tips under magnification). Very light caramel stains are visible at the top and bottom edge on the front but are muted by the bold red background. The reverse is also bold and crisp with three small faint caramel stains visible. Beautifully centered (slightly to the left). This card was obviously once packaged in a box of Cracker Jack in 1915 (as opposed to being from a "factory set" obtained by mail directly from the company). There is not only a charm to Cracker Jack cards that actually came in boxes, they can also represent a tremendous collecting value as small stains naturally affect technical grades. (An outstanding factory-set 1915 Cracker Jack Mathewson graded SGC MINT 96, for example, sold in REA's May 2012 auction for $41,475.) This is an exceptional example of Christy Mathewson, one of baseball's greatest legends, in an extremely desirable grade, from one of collecting's most classic and popular sets. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,555.00
