1911 M116 Sporting Life Amby McConnell, Chicago - Extreme Rarity!
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,443.75
Graded VG 40 by SGC. The M116 Sporting Life McConnell with Chicago variation is one of the two ultra-rare team variations in the M116 set which appear on virtually every M116 want list and since 1911 have kept almost all collectors from ever completing their sets. Literally many times rarer than the T206 Wagner, in all our years we cannot recall offering a single example in any condition. Only one other example has ever been graded by SGC (an outstanding EX 60 example which was presented in Lew Lipset's Old Judge auction in 2007 and sold for a remarkable $31,024). The PSA Population Report records four additional examples. Amby McConnell was with the Boston Red Sox in 1910 and his M116 Sporting Life card normally features him with that team designation. The Sporting Life set was printed over two seasons (1910 and 1911). When McConnell was traded to the Chicago White Sox for the 1911 season, Sporting Life changed the team designation on his card, but the print run for the team-change card was obviously extremely low. Literally only a few examples are known. One other card in the M116 set, McQuillan (Cincinnati variation), shares this same degree of extreme rarity due to a similar team-change in the M116 set. This is an extremely attractive example of one of the great rarities of the M116 Sporting Life set. Bright, fresh, and clean, both front and back, with strong corners. This card has an EX (or better!) appearance at a glance and has been downgraded only due to a very small surface chip in the extreme top right border. The back features the rare "Over 300 Subjects" style reverse. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,443.75
