1911 M116 Sporting Life Partial Set (239 of 287) Plus 9 Variations

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $7,702.50

Presented is a very substantial near-complete set of 239 different M116 Sporting Life cards (plus nine variations and one duplicate for a total of 249 cards). This collection represents 77% of the complete set (which includes 287 different players, and counting all variations, is complete at 326 cards). The M116 card set was issued by Sporting Life ("The Paper That Made Baseball Popular"), and by any measure is one of the most important sets of the era. Sporting Life was no doubt encouraged by the success of the popular tobacco cards of the day, and this issue shares a similar design with the tobacco cards of the era. Sporting Life was a major competitor of The Sporting News in the early part of the twentieth century. The Sporting Life set was issued in twenty-four series of twelve cards each, sold by mail for four cents per series. M116s are one of the most significant and substantial issues of the era, and are considerably scarcer than their tobacco-card counterparts. We have selected three cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Condition composite: 27% Vg-Ex (includes a few Ex to Ex-Mt), 20% Vg, 8% lesser grades, and 45% which range from Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex) in appearance but which we believe have a very slight trim. Keys: Baker/black back (Pr), Baker/blue back (Pr), Bender (trimmed, otherwise Pr), Chase/blue (Pr/Fr), Chase/pastel (Vg), Clarke (Vg), Collins/blue (slight trim, otherwise Fr), and Flick (Fr). The three graded cards, all SGC NM 84, are Erwin, P. Graham, and McBride. As can easily be seen in scans provided online, many cards which we have graded at very modest levels due to various technical flaws present at a considerably higher level in appearance. Most cards graded by us as Pr or Pr/Fr have a far superior appearance at a glance, and many have been downgraded due to back damage, which in many cases is somewhat minor. The set includes the following variations: Baker/blue back, Chase/blue, Davis/blue, Dooin/blue, L. Doyle/blue, McQuillan/blue, Moren/black back, Mullin/blue back, and Walsh/gray background. The one duplicate is Tenney/blue back. This is a particularly attractive collection, maintaining a high degree of consistency in appearance throughout, and presenting at a level far superior to the technically accurate condition composite. This collection, highlighted by six Hall of Famers, represents a substantial foundation for the assembly of a beautiful (though, with a few exceptions, modest in technical grade) complete set of this important issue. This collection also represents an extremely rare, potentially spectacular collecting value, as such a sharp-looking large collection of M116 Sporting Life (which in technically higher grade would sell for many time what this lot will sell for) is almost never seen. Total: 249 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $7,702.50
