1914 E & S Publishing Co. Christy Mathewson Postcard

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,422.00

Graded EX 5 by PSA. This exceptionally rare 1914 postcard, issued by the E & S Publishing Co. of Chicago, features Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in a pitching pose. The “Big Six” is displayed front and center with a number of smaller cartoons surrounding his larger image. Each cartoon is captioned by a short fact about Mathewson. For instance, “In 1905 Mathewson shut out Connie Mack’s team in the World Series three times.” The postcard is bright and clean, both front and back, with no creases, and even wear on the corners. It has never been mailed and there is no writing on the traditional postcard reverse. This is one of the most striking and visually exciting of all Christy Mathewson cards; it is also one of the rarest, with fewer (possibly far fewer) than ten examples known to exist. Dimensions: 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+.
