1923-1924 Tomas Gutierrez Cuban League Album
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,370.00
Presented is an extremely rare Tomas Gutierrez Cuban League trading-card album. Tomas Gutierrez cards are among the rarest of all tobacco issues. The 85-card set is the largest of the Cuban baseball-card issues of the 1920s, and also one of the most popular. The cards were issued in Havana, Cuba, over a two-year span, from 1923 to 1924, for the Diaz Cigarettes brand. The set features many Negro Leagues players, including Hall of Famers Oscar Charleston, Pop Lloyd, and Cristobal Torriente. This album was available in exchange for a complete set of cards according to the backs of the cards, which are printed in Spanish and mention the offer. The album is an elaborate hardcover book measuring 8.5 x 10 inches with forest green covering and gold lettering on the front. Preprinted pictures of each card from the set are featured on a series of eight fold-out panels with blank reverses. This album shows cosmetic wear to the outside portion with fading of the gold lettering, fraying to the edges, and loosened spinal binding. The interior pages, however, remain in outstanding condition with few visible flaws and perfect, accordion-style binding. This is only the second complete example of this rare album that we have seen. (We have seen individual pages sold as "team sets," which presumably were the result of disassembling a complete album.) This album is an amazing piece as it features pictures of every card from the set inside, including all of the key cards, and several of Hall of Fame collecting's "dream cards." This is an incredibly rare companion piece to the scarce and highly collectible Tomas Guttierez set. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
