1912 T207 Brown Background PSA- and SGC-Graded Complete Master Set Minus 1 (205 cards)

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $18,960.00

Presented is a complete set of 200 1912 T207 Brown Background cards, including all of the many extreme rarities of the set, plus five variations, for a total of 205 different cards. This set is missing only the rare Irving Lewis "no emblem" for completion of a master set! The entire set is graded and encapsulated by SGC (189), PSA (15), and BVG (1). This is a particularly attractive set, especially for T207, which are so prone to surface cracking and creasing. The set was assembled over a period of many years by a very dedicated collector. The T207 set includes approximately fifty particularly rare cards, and from the earliest days of collecting this fact has always made completion extremely challenging. The T207 set has always been fascinating to advanced collectors, and includes a high concentration of obscure players that appear in few other sets, as well as Hall of Famers such as Tris Speaker and Walter Johnson, and “Black Sox” members Buck Weaver and Ed Cicotte.

In the following condition composite, identifying card numbers are referenced from the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. As is well known, grading companies can be very harsh on T207s (especially due to light surface creasing, which is characteristic of the set), and many cards have a far superior appearance than suggested by their technically accurate grades. SGC grading composite: EX 60 (4 cards): #62 (PSA EX 5), 109 Marsans, 141, and 193. VG/EX+ 55 (6 cards): #61, 103, 116 McKechnie (HOF), 152 Ryan, 181, and 191. VG/EX 50 (3 cards): #14 Blackburne (PSA VG-EX 4 MC), 104a Livingston ("A" on shirt), and 127. VG+ 45 (1 card): #171. VG 40 (29 cards): #2, 11 Benz, 12, 19 Bresnahan (HOF, PSA VG 3 MC), 23, 34, 38, 42, 47, 64, 68 Gregg, 71, 83 Hyatt (PSA VG 3), 91, 99, 107 Lowdermilk (PSA VG 3), 108 Marquard (HOF), 112, 118, 123, 125 Mogridge, 128, 155, 157, 162, 179, 182, 187 Wheat (HOF), and 197 Woodburn (PSA VG 3 MC). Authentic (26 cards): #4a Austin (insignia on shirt), 25 Carey (HOF), 27, 35 (blank back), 36 Cunningham, 49, 69, 75, 86 Kelly, 88 Kling, 92, 104b Livingston (Big "C" on shirt), 117, 124, 126 Moore, 131b Mullin (No "D" on cap), 139, 147 Ragan, 150, 164 Speaker (HOF), 168 Steele, 169, 174 Sweeney, 175, 176 Thomas, and 188.

Rare Advertising Backs: Ten cards have the rare red Cycle back, twenty-one cards have the rare Broadleaf advertising back, three cards have the rare Napoleon advertising back, and twenty-two have no advertising on their reverses (often referred to by collectors in the old days as issued by Coupon Cigarettes). There is also one blank-back card included. The rare-back cards (Cycle, Broadleaf, and no advertising) are usually associated with the rarer cards in the T207 set, as most were only issued with the rare advertising backs. There are also cards that only come with Recruit backs, however, such as Ellis, Graham, Kling, and Stovall, among others, that are also noteworthy rarities. This is a very attractive complete set, appearing at a glance far stronger than suggested by the technically accurate assigned grades listed above. The large number of extremely rare cards in the T207 set makes this issue one of the most difficult to complete of all 1910-era tobacco-card sets. This is an exceptional complete set of this classic and sometimes overlooked tobacco-card issue, which is so rarely offered in complete-set form. The equivalent SMR value for just 174 of the cards is $11,155. This is, however, just a guide (when offered individually the rare cards routinely sell for more than guide price) and it also does not include the twenty-six cards graded Authentic or the five qualified cards, and this total factors in the sixty-one half-graded cards at the lower whole-grade level. Also, many of the tougher cards in this set are listed at the common price in SMR, and there is no accounting for any premium associated with the rare advertising backs. Total: 205 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $10,000++. SOLD FOR $18,960.00
