1910 W-UNC Strip Card Complete Set (26) Including Cobb and Wagner

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,666.25

Complete set of 1910 W-UNC strip "cards" highlighted by Hall of Famers Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, and Honus Wagner. This unusual and rare set has mystified and captured the attention of advanced collectors for decades. These colorful "cards," most of which depict the players in portrait form and are so reminiscent of both 1910-era candy cards and "strip cards," actually originate from a series of children's notebook covers featuring these baseball-card images, and have been neatly cut from the covers (very likely as intended, as they certainly are designed with the appearance of a card set). Each card measures approximately 1-3/8 by 2-3/8 inches. Each player is identified by last name and team on the front. Almost half the subjects within this set are Hall of Famers: Bender, Bresnahan, Chance, Cobb, Collins, Crawford, Evers, Jennings, Johnson, Mathewson, Speaker, and Wagner. These cards are in mostly Poor to Good condition (with two better) but would likely only be encapsulated as Authentic if submitted for grading because they are hand-cut and have no outside borders. Bert Cole and Walter Johnson are missing substantial portions of the card and are included only for the sake of completion. Two cards are already graded: Byrne (PSA PR-FR 1, four borders intact) and Kling (SGC Authentic). Complete sets of this issue are rarely seen and the inclusion of numerous key Hall of Famers makes this set very appealing to collectors. Total: 26 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,666.25
