1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Mickey Welch SGC NM 84 - Newly Discovered and Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $23,700.00

Graded NM 84 by SGC. 1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Hall of Famer “Smiling” Mickey Welch of the New York Giants (pose 486-4, pitching, right arm extended forward). This is a stunning high-grade Hall of Fame example from one of the nineteenth century's most revered sets. This is the only example graded at this level and one of only eight N173 cabinets of any subject ever to receive a grade of NM from either PSA or SGC (out of 322 examples graded between the two companies). In fact, there has never been an N173 of any player graded higher than NM!

Interesting provenance note: The gentleman who consigned this card consigned a total of THREE N173 Old Judge Cabinet cards – all of Mickey Welch – all in great shape and each a different pose. Perhaps the most fascinating part is that he found these in an album kept by his family, who resided in the Holyoke, Massachusetts area. Welch played in the minors with Holyoke in the earliest days of his career and this may explain why the cards were found there. They have been saved in his family since 1888 and all the rest of the materials were just various family photos ranging in date from the 1860s to the 1890s. He thinks there is a possibility (though he is far from certain) that he has some significant family connection to Mickey Welch, thus explaining the inclusion of the three N173 Welch cabinet cards. There must be some explanation as to how and why three Welch cabinet cards have been saved with his family pictures and this would certainly make sense.

This is a stunning card! Bright, clean, and crisp. The image is very bold with exceptionally strong contrast. The photograph is in perfect condition. The cabinet-card mount has virtually no corner or edge wear. All Old Judge cabinets are extremely desirable, especially Hall of Famers, and Mickey Welch, of course, is one of the most prominent of all nineteenth-century Hall of Famers. This card has an 1888 copyright date. That year marked the Giants' first pennant, as Welch and teammate Tim Keefe accounted for 61 of the team's 84 victories. N173 Old Judge cabinet cards are among the most desirable nineteenth-century cards. This is a remarkably high-grade example of Hall of Famer Mickey Welch from a small but exciting newly discovered group. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $23,700.00
