1912 T227 "Series of Champions" Near-Complete Set (22/24): #2 PSA Set Registry

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,332.50

Presented is a near-complete set of twenty-two cards from the extremely scarce 1912 T227 “Series of Champions” series. The set is missing only two cards (Brown and Rodgers) for completion. (There are only twenty-four cards in the set despite the backs of the cards stating that there are twenty-five.) T227 “Series of Champions” are unique in design, and have the look of “giant T206s.” The set features champions from numerous sports, including four Hall of Fame baseball players and five boxers, including legend Jack Johnson. Cards from this series are many times rarer than most other tobacco issues of the same era, such as T205 or T206, and represent a great challenge for collectors attempting to finish the set. It is not often that a complete (or near-complete) set from this issue is assembled, let alone made available! Each card in the offered set is graded and encapsulated by PSA. The set currently ranks number two all-time finest on the PSA Set Registry with a GPA of 1.84. Do not be fooled by the modest technical grades! This overall GPA is somewhat deceiving, since for most other sets these grades would not be considered impressive, but for T227s, which are all condition rarities, it is really mid-grade. T227s rarely survive in technically high grades. The reason is that cards from this set were packaged in tobacco pouches without protection from either tobacco or general handling. Our consignor has methodically worked for a number of years to find the best examples of T227s that he could, and as a result, he also owns the all-time finest set (GPA 3.94). These cards are his duplicates which he set aside as he upgraded his collection but still represent an extremely impressive assemblage in their own right, including several examples that are truly high-grade for this issue. The PSA grades are as follows: Two VG-EX 4: Marquard (baseball, HOF) and Mulford. Five VG 3: Coulon, Hoppe, Kramer, McGrath, and Zbyszko. Seven GOOD 2: Attell, Dixie IV, Goodwin, Kay, McDermott, Uhlan, and Wolgast. Eight POOR 1: Baker (baseball, HOF), Bender (baseball, HOF), Cobb (baseball, HOF), De Oro, Hilton, Johnson, Klaus, and Sheppard. Even the lesser-graded examples are extremely pleasing and present exceptionally well. The reverse of each card advertises either Miner's Extra or Honest Long Cut, with each brand evenly represented by eleven cards within this collection. This is a very attractive group, carefully selected with eye-appeal in mind, from this rare, uniquely designed, and in our opinion, extremely overlooked tobacco issue. Total: 22 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $5,332.50
