1909-1911 T206 Rebel Oakes - Missing Red Ink Variation!
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,540.50
Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Presented is an extremely rare and extremely noteworthy printing variation of Rebel Oakes, missing red ink, from the classic T206 set. Even at a glance, the difference between this T206 Oakes printing variation card and a normal T206 Oakes card is very striking. This card is missing all of the red coloring in Oakes' team name, Cincinnati, on the front of his jersey. According to T206Resource.com, T206s were printed in six different color stages, with red as the final color pass. This card appears to have completely eluded the last stage of printing as not even a trace of red is visible anywhere on the card. T206 printing variations of this magnitude are rare. T206Resource.com notes that most of the known examples missing the final red step of the printing process are Boston and Cincinnati subjects. This same printing anomaly is responsible for the more well known T206 Sweeney "No B" printing variation (that in the early days of collecting appeared on all formal T206 checklists). While this Rebel Oakes card would be of great interest to T206 collectors regardless of condition, the offered card happens to be in extremely fine VG-EX condition, appearing much stronger than the assigned grade. Presenting as Nr/Mt from the front with strong corners and excellent centering, the card has been downgraded due to light toning, presumably from album removal, on the reverse. This is an extremely unusual, interesting, rare, and very striking printing error from the T206 series. Please note: The normal T206 Oakes card with red is pictured here is for illustration purposes only and is not included with the lot. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,540.50
