1909-1911 T206 Christy Mathewson - Portrait - SGC EX/NM 80

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,443.75

Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. This is an extremely attractive high-grade example of one of the three classic poses of Christy Mathewson from the T206 White Borders series. The T206 Christy Mathewson portrait pose is one of the most popular of all T206s, and one of the most highly regarded of all Mathewson cards. This example has a particularly bold image and extremely vibrant colors. It is centered slightly to the bottom (approximately 60/40 T/B). This is a very sharp-looking card, extremely clean, both front and back, with four strong corners displaying only very minor wear on the bottom two corners. The Sweet Caporal advertising on the reverse is well centered and boldly printed. This is a superb example, conservatively graded in our opinion, with the appearance of a NM-MT example. This card (submitted for grading by REA) was very carefully chosen for purchase by our consignor in the 1980s specifically due to its outstanding condition, and at that time was described very fairly for the condition standards of the day as NM-MT (long before the advent of professional grading). This is a stunning high-grade example of one of Mathewson’s most striking cards. The SMR value for the assigned grade is $2,700. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,443.75
