1909-1911 T206 White Border Near-Complete Set (510 of 524)
Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $23,700.00
If this T206 set looks familiar, it's because it was offered as lot #731 in REA's 2012 auction. The winner of that auction, PSA founder David Hall, collects T-206s by back and factory (a complete set is over 5,300 cards!). This set, originating directly from the estate of legendary collector and T206 specialist Joe Pelaez, included the only known copy in existence of the T206 Schulte front view with a Piedmont 350 series back. Hall paid $44,438 for the set, just to get the one card! (Now that's dedication!) As it was, he also found six other cards he needed for his collection: Beaumont (EPDG), Chase/pink (Sovereign), Egan (Carolina Brights), Strang (Broadleaf 350), Young/port. (Sweet Cap 350/ factory 25), and Young/glove (Sweet Cap 350-460/factory 42). And then he sent the rest of the Joe Palaez set back to us. When David Hall told us that he would be sending the set back for the 2013 auction after taking out the extraordinarily rare (and to date unique) Schulte front-back variation, we almost thought he was kidding. As you can see, he was not, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to offer this T206 set again with just a few cards missing, and David Hall is very happy to have added seven cards to his amazing T206 collection.
15% Vg to Vg-Ex, 40% range from Fr to Gd-Vg, and 45% grade Pr (including a few trimmed). Near-complete 1909-1911 T206 set (510 of 524), missing only the "Big 4" (Wagner, Plank, Magie, and Doyle/NY NL), Demmitt and O'Hara, St. Louis variations, Willis/bat, and the seven cards outlined above for completion. This set includes all other rarities, including Elberfeld/port., Washington, as well as a Ty Cobb/bat-off-shoulder pose with the Cycle 460 back (a particularly noteworthy front-back combination). The T206 set, of course, is highlighted by literally dozens of Hall of Famers, including four Ty Cobb cards, Cy Young, two Walter Johnsons, three Christy Mathewsons, etc., as well as the scarce 48-card Southern League series. Although in mixed grade, this is still a very pleasing set, with most cards having bright colors and crisp focus as originally issued. Ten different tobacco advertising brands are represented in this set (including Hindu - red, American Beauty, Cycle, Sovereign, El Principe De Gales, Tolstoi, Old Mill, and Polar Bear). Keys: Baker (Pr), Beckley (Gd), Bender/no trees (Pr), Bender/trees (trimmed), Bender/port. (Pr), Bresnahan/port. (Pr), Bresnahan/bat (Pr), G. Brown/Wash. (Pr), Brown/Chi. (Gd-Vg, Polar Bear), Brown/Cubs (Fr-Gd), Brown/port. (Pr), Waddell/throw (Gd-Vg), Wallace (Pr), Walsh (Pr), Wheat (Pr, Polar Bear), Willis/port. (Vg), Willis/throw (Pr), and Young/bare hand (Fr). Of special note was the fact that Joe Pelaez had not one but two sets of T206s. His first T206 set (which was offered last year in a separate lot) was in much higher grade, and was constantly upgraded over the years. This second T206 set was his “pedestrian” set, more modest in grade and assembled just for fun because he couldn’t get enough of a good thing, but still comprised of beautiful cards that anyone and everyone could appreciate. This is a very attractive mixed-grade near-complete set of the 1910 era's most classic tobacco-card issue, representing an outstanding collector value. From the Joe Pelaez Collection. Total: 510 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000. SOLD FOR $23,700.00
