1909-1911 T206 White Border Collection Including Printing/Cutting Oddities and 21 HOFers (107 cards)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $7,110.00

Collection of 107 assorted (97 different) T206 White Border tobacco cards, highlighted by twenty-one Hall of Famers, including Walter Johnson, Roger Bresnahan, and Hugh Jennings. These Hall of Famers, which would normally be the focus of any lot, may not even be the most interesting or important cards in this collection. Instead, several printing oddities and hand-cut cards may capture that title. This collection has been saved in the family of the original owner since 1910. Of special note regarding provenance, these T206s are from the very same collection as the T206 Plank (Piedmont back) which appeared as Lot 211 in REA's May 2011 auction, selling for $41,125. This fact alone suggests that at least the sixteen Piedmont cards (at least half of which appear hand-cut) may have an important story to tell. (REA believes that all T206 Planks with Piedmont backs were hand-cut as opposed to machine-cut.) Condition: 41% range from Vg to Vg-Ex, 43% range from Pr to Gd (mostly Gd), and 16% are slightly trimmed or hand-cut. The fact that some of these cards are obviously slightly miscut by hand (apparently from sheets) as opposed to machine-cut, combined with the fact that the Plank with the Piedmont back (only a few Planks are known with the Piedmont back) came from this same collection, suggests a fascinating lost history regarding the printing of the T206 Plank. Most of the cards in this collection have Sweet Caporal advertisements on the back. As noted, sixteen have Piedmont backs. Also included are two Sovereign backs, one Old Mill, and one Hindu - Brown (Hall of Famer Roger Bresnahan). We have selected six cards to be graded by SGC. Highlights: Bender/no trees (Vg), Bender/trees (Gd), two Bresnahan/port. (VG/EX+ 55 and VG 40 Hindu back), Bresnahan/bat (Gd), Brown/port. (Vg), Chase/pink (possibly hand-cut, otherwise Vg), Chesbro (hand-cut, otherwise Gd/Vg), E. Collins (hand-cut, otherwise Gd), two Crawford/throwing (both Gd), Davis (Vg), two Duffy (Gd and Fr), Elberfeld/Washington, port. (Gd), Griffith/port. (hand-cut, otherwise Fr), Huggins/port. (VG/EX+ 55), Jennings/both hands (Vg+), Jennings/one hand (VG/EX 50), two Johnson/port. (VG+ 45 and Gd), Keeler/port. (VG/EX+ 55), and Willis/bat (Gd). This is a very appealing collection of cards, saved and consigned by the family of the original owner, direct from "the olden days," some a little rough but still very collectable. We always enjoy offering mixed-grade groups of T206s, especially when they include many Hall of Famers, but the true significance of this particular group in our eyes is their provenance and the mystery of the hand-cut cards and printing anomalies. The equivalent SMR value for just the six graded cards (factoring in the half-grades at the lower whole grade level and not including the 101 ungraded cards!) is $1,570. Total: 107 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $7,110.00
