1909-1911 T206 Near-Complete SGC-Graded Set (520/524)

Starting Bid - $25,000.00, Sold For - $71,100.00

Presented is an outstanding near-complete set of the classic T206 set, missing only the "Big Four," for a total of 520 cards. The completion of any T206 set is an extraordinary feat. The completion of a set in such consistent exceptionally strong mid-grade and better condition (467 of the 520 cards range from VG to EX/NM), as presented here, represents a particularly noteworthy card-collecting achievement. This set was assembled with extreme care by a very dedicated condition-conscious collector over a period of many years. The entire set (missing only the "Big 4") is graded and encapsulated by SGC (with fifty-one PSA and one GAI). The set is comprised of three EX/NM 80, thirteen EX+ 70, 130 EX 60 (three are qualified), six VG/EX+ 55, 212 VG/EX 50 (one is qualified), two VG+ 45, 101 VG 40, one GOOD+ 35, twenty-four GOOD 30, eleven FAIR 20, two PR 10, and thirteen Authentic.

The 1909-1911 T206 "White Borders" set is universally regarded as the single most important and popular baseball card set of the 1910 era. This is an extremely attractive and clean near-complete set of 520 cards. This set is highlighted by seventy-four Hall of Famers, including four Ty Cobb cards, three Christy Mathewsons, two Walter Johnsons, three Cy Youngs, as well as many rarities (including the St. Louis variations of Demmitt and O'Hara) and all 48 of the scarce Southern League series cards. While the cards span a variety of grades, the vast majority of the set (70%) grades Vg-Ex or higher. The entire set has tremendous eye-appeal across the board and contains many significant condition highlights, including strong examples of key Hall of Famers Ty Cobb (including a tough Old Mill Bat Off), Christy Mathewson, and Cy Young as well as desirable examples of noted scarcities Demmitt/St. Louis (VG/EX 50) and O'Hara/St. Louis (GOOD 30, name visible on top and bottom). Even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. It would be a challenge in any era to assemble such an attractive T206 set, and all the more challenging to find a set of this extraordinary quality already assembled and available for sale as a unit today. Any T206 set, of course, naturally has a tremendous "break value" and most quality sets are broken up and sold individually. This is a very clean, attractive near-complete T206 set, just four cards away from the assembly of a magnificent fully graded complete set. Most of the cards have Piedmont or Sweet Caporal backs, but also included are El Principe de Gales, Old Mill, Polar Bear, Sovereign, and Tolstoi.

For convenience, we are providing here the grades of all seventy-four Hall of Famers and additional key cards: SGC grading composite: EX/NM 80 (3 cards): Bastian (PSA EX-MT 6, Southern Leaguer), Leach/bending over, and Moeller.
