1887-1890 Allen & Ginter and Kinney Nonsport Card Collection (66) Including N230 Partial Set
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $474.00
Collection of sixty-six nonsport cards produced by Allen & Ginter and Kinney between 1887 and 1890. A total of thirteen different sets are represented by this collection, highlighted by a partial set of N230 "Famous Running Horses." While this collection does not contain any great rarities, it is interesting and significant as it is an original collection that has remained in the same family since the 1880s, and this collection was originally accompanied by two of the exceedingly rare N167 Old Judge baseball players (one of which is offered elsewhere in this auction). It is fascinating to think that these sixty-six cards were collected at the same time, and saved just as carefully, as the two N167s which would go on to become extremely valuable and important to collectors as the first baseball tobacco-insert cards. Allen & Ginter: N3 "Arms of all Nations" (4 cards): #18, 20, 30, and 49 (all Vg), N4 "Birds of America" (1 card): Fantail Pigeon (Vg), and N28 "World's Champions" (2 cards): Daly and Sorakichi (both Vg). Kinney: N216 "Animals" (2 cards): Polar Bear (Vg) and Porcupine (Fr), N219 "Harlequin Cards" (1 card): King of Diamonds (Vg-Ex), N220 "Harlequin Cards" (3 cards): Two Vg, one Pr, N222 "Leaders" (1 card): Lord Nelson (Vg-Ex), N224 "Military Series" (8 cards): All different (five Vg, three Fr), N226 "Naval Vessels of the World" (1 card): U.S.S. New Ironsides (Vg), N229 "Famous Running Horses" (4 cards): #1, 8, 9, and 21 (all Vg/Vg-Ex), N230 "Famous Running Horses" (29 cards): Partial set of fifteen different plus fourteen duplicates (Vg to Vg-Ex with five lesser), N231 "Great American Trotters" (1 card): Joe Elliott (Gd), and N240 "Types of Nationalities" (9 cards): #2, 5, 11, 12, 13, 16, 20, 22, and 23. Gd to Vg. This is an attractive collection of nonsport cards from several classic and popular nineteenth-century issues, all of which have remained together and carefully saved as keepsakes by the family of our consignor since the day these cards were issued over 100 years ago! Total: 66 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $474.00
