Roberto Clemente Single-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $533.25

Official National League (Feeney) ball signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente. Clemente has scripted his name in blue ink on a side panel, with the signature grading "7/8." It should be noted that this ball does not come with an LOA from James Spence Authentication. The signature appears to be perfectly executed; however, the dating of the ball is inconclusive. Just below the Spalding logo are two printed lines reading, respectively, "Reg. U. S. Pat. Off." and "Haiti." JSA believes that ONL balls featuring a "Haiti" stamp first appeared in 1973, which would have been just after Clemente's untimely death on December 31, 1972. To date neither we nor JSA has seen a 1972 team-signed ball on an official National League Haiti-stamped ball. However, it is entirely possible that the "Haiti" stamped balls were first issued in the fall of 1972, after the season ended. However, without any confirmation of that fact, and due to ambiguity regarding the exact dating of Spalding ONL "Haiti" balls, this ball is offered with no authentication. Provenance: According to our consignor, who is not a collector, the ball was a gift to him many years ago from a family member (his aunt). The ball displays a few minor surface marks and is in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $533.25
