1889 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Willard "Grasshopper" Mains SGC NM 84

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,666.25

Graded NM 84 by SGC. Incredible, newly-discovered 1889 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet example of Willard "Grasshopper" Mains (note: his name is misspelled as "Maines"), St. Paul pitcher (pose #290-3; pitch, hands by neck). This exceptional cabinet is the only example graded at this level and is one of only nine N173 Old Judge cabinet cards (of any subject) to receive the NM grade out of 337 cards evaluated to date by SGC and PSA combined! The image on this card is extremely bold, with phenomenal contrast and tremendous detail. Very bright, crisp, and clean, both front and back. Recently discovered in an old family album in Minnesota, this is one of two cabinets that have been beautifully preserved since the year of issue (the other appears as a separate lot). This is a remarkably high grade and simply stunning-in-all-respects sample from one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,666.25
