1974 Muhammad Ali/George Foreman Fight Program - "Rumble in the Jungle"

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $1,896.00

Exceedingly rare onsite fight program for the 1974 heavyweight title bout between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali, famously known as "The Rumble in the Jungle," held on October 30, 1974, in Kinshasa, Zaire. This is one of fewer than ten programs from this fight we have ever seen and the first we have EVER offered. The twelve-page program (not counting the covers), which is written entirely in French, features portrait images of both fighters on the cover. The interior pages include photos of both fighters posing with President Mobutu, the “tale of the tape,” and a fifteen-round scorecard. Pictured on the rear cover are photos of past heavyweight boxing champions, including Joe Louis, Sonny Liston, and Rocky Marciano. The famed "Rumble in the Jungle" was one of the defining moments of Ali's illustrious career. Matched against Foreman, who was coming off a dominating victory over Joe Frazier (one of Foreman's blows actually lifted Frazier off the canvas), Ali was given little chance by many pundits of regaining the heavyweight title. Undaunted by critics and buoyed by the support of the local fans, who constantly chanted "Ali Bomaye!" ("Ali kill him"), Ali shocked the world by registering an eighth-round knockdown of Foreman. His victory came in large part from his use of the famous "Rope-a-Dope," a strategy of letting Foreman tire himself out by pounding on him while he remained covered up on the ropes. The program (8.25 x 11.5 inches) displays a handwritten ink notation (in French), as well as two small stray ink marks, on the front cover. A few light-to-moderate creases are evident throughout. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. This is an exceptional example of an extremely significant and historic boxing rarity. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $1,896.00
