1966 Topps "Batman - Black Bat" Unopened Wax Box (24 Packs)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,740.00
Extremely rare complete unopened wax box from the 1966 Topps "Batman - Black Bat" issue. This box houses twenty-four five-cent wax packs, each containing five cards and a stick of gum, for a total of 120 cards. Batman took the world by storm in 1966 with the introduction of the wildly popular Batman television series. Topps joined the bandwagon with several series of card sets devoted to the Caped Crusader. This classic 55-card set, the first in the Batman series, features brilliantly illustrated scenes of Batman and Robin in action as they protect Gotham City. It also contains several small subsets devoted entirely to four of the main villains: The Joker, The Penguin, Cat Woman, and The Riddler. The set is known as "Black Bat" for the small black Batman logo on the front of each card but is oftentimes referred to as the "Orange Backs" series in reference to the orange colored reverse which provided details on the depicted scene. The offered wax box has been beautifully preserved throughout the years. The interior packs all present Nr/Mt-Mt, with vibrant color illustrations of Batman and Robin on the front of each pack. The display box is also in excellent condition with only very minimal handling wear visible and a small tear to one of the interior side flaps. The die-cut top panel has been punched out for store display as intended. While it is impossible to provide guarantees with reference to grading of unopened material, there is, of course, the very real possibility that within this box are Mint or Gem Mint cards from this set. This is a very rare wax box, surviving in superb condition, from this popular 1960s Topps nonsport issue. Total: 24 packs. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $4,740.00
