1939 R165 Gum, Inc. "War News Pictures" Rare "Dirty Dozen" Cards (#109-120)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,962.50
Presented here are the extremely rare "Dirty Dozen" from the classic 1939 R165 "War News Pictures" bubble-gum series issued by Gum, Inc. The set chronicles the extraordinary world events unfolding at this time, and the exceptional graphics and historically significant subject matter of this gum-card issue make it one of the all-time classics of nonsport sets from the 1930s. The twelve rare cards (#109-120) are commonly referred to by advanced collectors as the "Dirty Dozen." These twelve cards are among the rarest of all 1930s gum cards and have been a thorn in the side of dedicated nonsport collectors since this set was first issued. Some collectors believe that these cards were not issued in packs, and that they could only be acquired if an example escaped the factory or by cutting them from panels and sheets that were not available to the public. The latter theory would explain the hand-cut nature of many examples. Each card in this collection has been encapsulated by PSA: VG 3 (2 cards): #109 and 115. GOOD 2 (1 card): #118. POOR 1 (2 cards): #111 and 120. Authentic (7 cards): #110, 112, 113, 114, 116, 117, and 119. All of the Authentic cards are hand-cut, and some display a vertical fold or ink stamping on the front, characteristics that collectors have come to expect from these particularly rare cards. These are the cards that have long stood in the way of the completion of so many R165 sets and are found only in the most advanced nonsport collections. This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire all twelve "Dirty Dozen" rare cards at one time. Total: 12 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,962.50
