1935 R41 "Dick Tracy Caramels" Complete Set (144) Plus Two Wrappers

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,185.00

Complete 144-card set of "Dick Tracy Caramels" issued in 1935 by the Walter H. Johnson Company of Chicago, Illinois, featuring the bright and extremely colorful artwork of Chester Gould. This is one of the all-time great nonsport sets of the 1930s and is very rarely seen in complete-set form. The set follows the adventures of Dick Tracy as he battles various criminals and villains. "Dick Tracy Caramel" cards are very scarce. A large hoard of cards numbered 121-144, which were discovered in the 1980s (all in Ex-Mt to Mint condition, but many collectors have questions regarding their authenticity or at least the date of printing as the cards from this find may have been printed from the original plates years later than originally issued) sometimes gives collectors the incorrect impression that cards from this set are readily available. The twenty-four high-grade find cards are relatively available (there was, after all, a very big find several decades ago, only of those twenty-four cards), but after that, all are actually pretty rare. This is why some cards are so easy to find but sets are so rare. The set grades 22% Ex or better (including twenty-three find cards #122-144 that are Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt), 59% range from Vg to Vg-Ex , and 19% Gd with a few lesser. The set is very attractive and remarkably consistent overall. For this issue in particular, a mid-grade set is very respectable. To emphasize the population profile of the set, a review of the PSA Population Report reveals that of the 1,756 R41 "Dick Tracy Caramel" cards graded to date, and though they represent only twenty-four cards in the set, 1,058 of these cards are numbered 121-144, and these 1,058 cards are almost all high grade (over 95% are graded Ex-Mt or better) as opposed to the very modest number of #1-120 cards. So don't be fooled about this set's rarity by the relatively abundant high-number series cards! This is a very attractive and rarely offered complete set of one of the 1930s most noteworthy and underestimated nonsport card sets. Accompanying the set are two of the extremely rare and attractive "Dick Tracy Caramel" wrappers (piece missing on the bottom edge of one, otherwise both are in Vg condition). Total: 146 items (144 cards and 2 wrappers). Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $1,185.00
