Nineteenth-Century Nonsport Tobacco-Card Collection with Rarities (401 cards, 78 different issues!)
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $2,014.50
Collection of 401 nonsport nineteenth-century cards from an astounding seventy-eight different sets issued by twelve different tobacco companies, including many rare type cards. This collection has been meticulously assembled card-by-card over a period of many years by a devoted advanced collector and encompasses many of the most popular issues of this era. This collection includes six complete or near-complete sets and multiple cards from twelve additional sets. The remaining sixty sets are represented by a single example. Our consignor made every attempt to select presentable, clean cards for this type collection, so condition averages Vg throughout the single type-card portion of his collection with some of the lesser-graded examples displaying issues on the reverse, common to nineteenth-century cards, including paper loss and glue residue. The near-complete and complete sets, as well as any set with multiple examples present, are detailed in the composite below. Organized by tobacco company, the collection is comprised of the following: 1) Allen & Ginter: N1, N2, N3, N4 Birds of America (49/50 missing only Raven for completion, 63% Gd/Vg, 37% Pr), N5, N6, N8, N9 Flags of All Nations (39/50, 75% Vg or better and 25% Pr to Gd), N11 Flags of the States (complete set of 47, 75% Gd to Vg-Ex and 25% Pr), N14, N16, N18, N19, N20, N21, N22, N23, N26, N27, N30, N31, N32, N33, N40, N41, and N44. 2) Duke: N70, N71 (two, both Vg/Vg-Ex), N72, N73, N74 Fishers & Fish (48/50, 55% Gd to VG and 45% Pr to Fr), N75, N76, N78, N79, N80, N86, N87, N88, N91 Yacht Colors of the World (eleven; five Vg and six Pr to Fr), N99 (two, both Vg), N110, N114, N119, N126 (30/51; Gd to Vg with four lesser), N128, and N133 (sixteen; Gd to Vg with two lesser). 3) Goodwin: N163 (34/50, presents mostly Vg but all Pr to Fr due to back issues), N164, and N165. 4) W.S.
