1891 N118 Duke "Jokes" Near-Complete Set (24/25)
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $355.50
Near-complete set of N118 Duke "Jokes" missing only one card ("Putting On Airs/A Regular Corker") for completion. These large-format cards measure approximately 2-7/16 x 4-1/4 inches and are a follow-up to the Duke's N81 "Jokes" issue, utilizing the same artwork that appears in the N81 Duke "Jokes" set. Issued in 1891 and inserted into packages of Honest Long Cut Tobacco, each N118 Duke "Jokes" card features two of the smaller-format N81 card designs on the front with humorous quips illustrated in vibrant color lithography. The reverse displays a checklist of the cards found within the series along with advertising for Duke and Honest Long Cut. Condition is eleven Gd to Vg and thirteen Pr to Fr. Several of the cards present stronger than their technically accurate assigned grades but are downgraded due to glue residue or writing on the reverse, traits common among nineteenth-century cards. This is an attractive near-complete set of this classic nineteenth-century nonsport issue. Total: 24 cards. Reserve $100. Estimate $200++. SOLD FOR $355.50
