1887 N284 Buchner Gold Coin "Police Inspectors and Captains" Collection (24) Plus Four N151 Duke Cards

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,540.50

Collection of twenty-four different 1888 N284 Buchner Gold Coin Tobacco cards featuring Police Inspectors and Captains. The Police Inspectors are a subset of the larger Buchner Gold Coin set, which also features baseball players, jockeys, and actors, and is known as one of the very few full-color card sets of the nineteenth century to include baseball players. The Police Inspectors and Captains are as rare (or rarer) than the ballplayers! Eight of these cards are white-bordered Type 1 style cards with the Gold Coin Tobacco name printed at top and measuring slightly smaller than the sixteen Type 2 style cards that comprise the balance of the collection. Condition: five Gd-Vg, sixteen Fr, and three Pr. Several cards present far better than their technical grades but have been downgraded due to pencil notations on the reverse. Also included are three different (plus one duplicate) 1880s N151 Duke Honest Long Cut Tobacco cards of Policemen. The four cards present as Vg-Ex on the front but technically grade more modestly due to writing on the reverse. Two cards are miscut while one has the ad clipped from the bottom. This is a very substantial group of rare cards from two of the most interesting of all nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco issues. Total: 28 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,540.50
