1888 G10 Allen & Ginter "Game Birds" Tobacco Banner
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,666.25
Outstanding full-color advertising poster (13 x 29 inches) for the N13 "Game Birds" set issued by Allen & Ginter in 1888. Produced by "Geo. S. Harris & Sons Phila., New York & Chicago" as noted in print along the base. The banner, which advertises for Richmond Straight Cut No. 1 and Virginia Brights Cigarettes, pictures all fifty cards offered in the set. Catalogued G-10 in the original American Card Catalog, this extremely rare tobacco banner is one of the ACC's most highly valued items. In the 1930s Jefferson Burdick assigned it a value of $10, at a time when the most valuable of all cards, the T206 Honus Wagner, was valued at a then very impressive $50. These banners were produced by tobacco companies for display in tobacco stores, to promote their particular brands and card issues. They are perhaps the most finely produced of all advertising displays relating to card collecting, and are considered by many to be the greatest prizes of all nineteenth-century tobacco-card collecting. The offered banner displays a number of minor flaws commensurate with its age and former use, including minor creasing, a few light stains, and a small number of edge tears. It should be noted that the vast majority of these defects are relegated to the border areas and the central image area presents an Excellent overall appearance. Mounted and framed to total dimensions of 20.75 x 36.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,666.25
