1888 G14 Allen & Ginter "Pirates of the Spanish Main" Tobacco Banner

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $5,925.00

Full-color advertising poster (21 x 29.75 inches) for the N19 "Pirates of the Spanish Main" set issued by Allen & Ginter in 1888. Produced by "Geo. S. Harris & Sons Phila., New York & Chicago" as noted in print along the base. The banner, which advertises for Virginia Brights Cigarettes, pictures all fifty cards offered in the set. Among those pictured here are Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Sir Henry Morgan, and Anne Bonny. Catalogued G-14 in the original American Card Catalog, this extremely rare tobacco banner is one of the ACC's most highly valued items. In the 1930s Jefferson Burdick assigned it a value of $15, at a time when the most valuable of all cards, the T206 Honus Wagner, was valued at a then very impressive $50. These banners were produced by tobacco companies for display in tobacco stores, to promote their particular brands and card issues. They are perhaps the most finely produced of all advertising displays relating to card collecting, and are considered by many to be the greatest prizes of all nineteenth-century tobacco-card collecting. This particular tobacco banner has always been a favorite among banner collectors due to its design and popular subject matter. The offered banner displays a number of minor flaws commensurate with its age and former use, including creases, light foxing along the base, and a small number of edge tears. Those condition anomalies aside, the colors remain bright and bold, and the piece exhibits an outstanding Excellent appearance overall. Mounted and framed to total dimensions of 30 x 39 inches. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000+. SOLD FOR $5,925.00
