1888 G9 Allen & Ginter "Flags of States and Territories" Tobacco Banner
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $1,422.00
Outstanding full-color advertising poster (15.25 x 21.75 inches) for the N11 "Flags of States and Territories" set issued by Allen & Ginter in 1888. Produced by "Geo. S. Harris & Sons Lith, Phila," as noted in print along the base. The banner, which advertises for Richmond Straight Cut No. 1 Cigarettes, pictures all forty-seven cards offered in the set. Catalogued G-9 in the original American Card Catalog, this extremely rare tobacco banner is one of the ACC's most highly valued items. In the 1930s Jefferson Burdick assigned it a value of $15, at a time when the most valuable of all cards, the T206 Honus Wagner, was valued at a then very impressive $50. These banners were produced by tobacco companies for display in tobacco stores, to promote their particular brands and card issues. They are perhaps the most finely produced of all advertising displays relating to card collecting, and are considered by many to be the greatest prizes of all nineteenth-century tobacco-card collecting. The offered banner displays eight moderate-to-heavy horizontal creases that affect the right side of the piece, as well a number of other light creases and small edge tears. Both of the original metal runners, located at the top and bottom borders, remain intact. Although technically in Good to Very Good condition, the banner presents beautifully with an overall Excellent appearance and is ideal for display. Mounted and framed to total dimensions of 22 x 28.25 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $1,422.00
