1960 Marilyn Monroe Signed Check
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,666.25
Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc., business check, dated July 1, 1960, signed by Marilyn Monroe. The check, drawn on the Colonial Trust Company of New York, is made out to “La Scala Restaurant” in the amount of $267.25 and is signed “Marilyn Monroe” in blue ink (grading “9”) along the base. The check number at the top ("259") has been crossed out in blue ink, with the number "329a" written beside it. La Scala was a Beverly Hills restaurant that Monroe frequented often during the last few years of her life. At the time this check was written, Monroe was just getting ready to film The Misfits, which was written specifically as a starring vehicle for her by her husband, Arthur Miller. Unfortunately, the breakup of her marriage, coupled with her increasing dependence on drugs and alcohol, caused director John Huston to suspend filming in August so that Monroe could be treated at a rehabilitation clinic. Ironically, The Misfits, which also starred an aging Clark Gable, was the last film for both screen legends. Gable died of a heart attack just days after the final scenes were filmed. Monroe, who had begun filming another picture in 1962 (Something’s Got to Give), mysteriously died in August of that year at the age of thirty-six. Only a very limited number of Marilyn Monroe checks exist. Almost all surfaced approximately thirteen years ago and this small supply has vanished into collections. Marilyn Monroe is one of the most forged of all celebrity signatures, giving these checks all the more special significance to collectors. We can't help but think that these Marilyn Monroe checks will continue to increase in value in the years to come. This is an ideal Marilyn Monroe Productions check example signed by America’s most enduring sex symbol. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation marks and a single vertical fold. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,666.25
