1855 Franklin Pierce Signed Appointment

Official Presidential appointment, dated December 31, 1855, signed by Franklin Pierce (1804-1869), fourteenth President of the United States. This one-page document appoints Jonathan Jenkins of California as Consul of the United States of America for the Port of Apia, Navigator's Islands (Samoan Islands). It is signed along the base in black ink by "Franklin Pierce" (slight brushing, otherwise "10"), as President, and by "W. L. Marcy" ("8"), as Secretary of State. The original paper seal of the United States remains firmly affixed in the lower left corner (faded). The reverse bears a written oath, signed by both Jenkins and the administering judge of the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of California. The green seal of the circuit court appears directly below the written oath. The document (16 x 12 inches), which is both printed and handwritten, displays both vertical and horizontal folds, as well as few areas of light, scattered toning. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Extremely impressive looking! Matted and framed together with a 5 x 7-inch engraving of Pierce to total dimensions of 30 x 20 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
