1915 Minneapolis 500 Panoramic Photo with Barney Oldfield and Eddie Rickenbacker
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $711.00
Panoramic photograph capturing the participants and officials of the 1915 Minneapolis 500 auto race, held on September 4, 1915. A total of forty-seven individuals are pictured here as they pose together on the track, including Barney Oldfield (fifth from the right, with a cigar in his mouth) and Eddie Rickenbacker (seventh from the right, wearing a cap). The competing race cars are easily visible in the background, as are two separate grandstands. The white-letter caption in the lower right reads "Officials and Drivers/1st Annual 500 Mile World's Motor Derby." The photographer's credit, "Camera-Craft/Mpls," appears in the lower left. Like the Indianapolis 500, which began in 1911, the Minneapolis 500 was intended to be an annual event, but problems with the construction of the course and financial woes resulted in its discontinuation after just one running. Earl Cooper won the first and only Minneapolis 500, which was held on the site now occupied by the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. This is a rare racing photo and the first example we have ever seen from this historic, but now forgotten event. Oldfield is one of racing's legendary drivers, while Rickenbacker, a top driver in his own right, saw later fame as America's top fighter pilot in World War I. The photo (35.5 x 8.5 inches) offers exceptional clarity and is printed on heavy stock. Six heavy vertical tears are present, as well as a few smaller tears in the lower right corner. Two small areas of paper loss are evident in the upper left corner and along the middle of the top border. While technically in Good condition, all of the flaws can be addressed by professional restoration and they do not significantly detract from the photo's overall visual appeal. Matted and framed, with archival materials, to total dimensions of 39.5 x 13 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $711.00
