1880-1892 N344 Thos. H. Hall "Between The Acts & Bravo - Athletes" Complete Set (12)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,422.00

Presented is an extremely rare complete twelve-card set of N344 Athletes. This set, issued by Thos. H. Hall and advertising the "Between The Acts & Bravo" brands, features a dozen oarsmen and pedestrians in portrait style with an advertisement at top and identification at the bottom. This set is of special significance to card collectors as it may actually be the first tobacco-insert card set featuring athletes. While the set has always been appreciated by nonsport collectors, the pursuits of pedestrians (as well as oarsmen, of course) are athletic by nature and were widely recognized as such in the nineteenth century. (In fact, cards of pedestrians appear with baseball players in the N162 Goodwin Champions, and N28 and N29 Allen & Ginter sets.) The off-white reverse features an additional advertisement for "Between The Acts & Bravo" along with manufacturer information. The cards present in Fair to Excellent condition on the front, but are all technically low-grade due to light glue residue and staining on the reverse. The fronts have a veneer finish which is a variation in the way this set was issued, according to The World Tobacco Index. This set is similar in style to a number of other nonsport sets issued by the same manufacturer and featuring Presidents, actors, and actresses. This is a particularly rare complete set of early tobacco cards that would make a significant contribution to any advanced sport or nonsport collection. Total: 12 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,422.00
