1927 W. A. & A. C. Churchman "Famous Golfers" (Large) PSA-Graded Complete Set (12)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,014.50

Presented is a complete twelve-card set of 1927 W. A. & A. C. Churchman "Famous Golfers - Series of 12" cards, highlighted by the legendary Bobby Jones. Inscribed as "Series of 12" on the reverse, this large-card variety of "Famous Golfers" is extremely rare and compliments its 50-card smaller version of the same year. Most advanced collectors would agree that this larger-card variety is about twenty-five times as rare as the scarce smaller version. This is an attractive complete set assembled by a very dedicated advanced golf-card collector. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. The PSA grades are as follows: One NM-MT 8: #5 Herd. One EX-MT+ 6.5: #9 Ray. One EX-MT 6: #2 Braid (HOF). Six EX 5: #1 Ball (HOF), 3 Duncan, 4 Hagen (HOF), 6 Holderness, 8 Mitchell, and 10 Taylor (HOF). One VG 3: #7 Jones (HOF, faint crease at top and bottom). Two GOOD 2: #11 Vardon (HOF, small piece of extra album paper on reverse) and 12 Wethered (glue residue). The three lesser-graded examples present at a far superior level than suggested by their technically accurate grades. Compared to vintage baseball cards, golf cards are beginning to be recognized as offering an outstanding value. This is an attractive complete set of one of the most highly prized golf sets of the era. The equivalent SMR value for the individual cards is $1,375 (excluding the three cards graded less than EX, including key card Bobby Jones). Total: 12 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,014.50
