1911 E94 George Close Candy Cy Young - Gold Background

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,370.00

Graded VG 40 by SGC. E94 candy card featuring the legendary Cy Young in a pitching pose set against a gold background (one of the seven different background color variations of the set). This is a particularly fascinating card of Young both because he is identified as “Old” Cy Young along the bottom border of the card, and the image of Young used on this card pictures him in a Boston Red Sox uniform even though he is identified with Cleveland on the card. Very attractive card with bright, crisp colors, clean front and back, evenly rounded corners, and a very slight diamond cut. No creases. The back features the checklist for the set. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, though they share many of the same subjects and poses. The E94 caramel card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that make reference to this company. This is an extremely attractive example of one of Cy Young's most classic cards from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++.
