1965 Topps Football Pair of Unopened Wax Packs with Empty Display Box
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,851.25
Pair of unopened five-cent wax packs from the 1965 Topps football issue accompanied by an original, empty display box. Each pack has been graded and encapsulated as NM 7 by Global Authentication and Global Authority (Note: these are the only companies with encapsulation available for oversize packs). The 1965 Topps set is one of the most popular and classic of all football-card sets, highlighted by Joe Namath's rookie card and loaded with Hall of Famers, rookies, and extremely tough-to-find short prints. The "tallboy" style was a new design for Topps and was not replicated among their other football issues. The unique size made storage among other collectibles difficult and made surviving, high-grade specimens harder to find and more appreciated by collectors. The two packs offered in this lot represent desirable companion pieces for set collectors as well as a grail of sorts for pack collectors. Wax packs from this set are noted as among the top ten most desirable in the hobby by pack expert Steve Hart in the book Collecting Sports Legends: The Ultimate Hobby Guide. Each pack contains five cards along with a magic rub-off emblem and has a short print visible on the reverse (Mike Taliaferro and Sherrill Headrick). Also included is an exceptional, empty counter-display box which maintains the vibrant colors intended to attract buyers during the time of sale. Only minor shelf wear is visible along the edges. Total: 3 items (two packs and one box). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $3,851.25
