Tom Sestak's Buffalo Bills AFL Collection with 1966 Buffalo Bills Team-Signed Football
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $4,147.50
This collection of rare American Football League (AFL) memorabilia, which originates from the estate of former Buffalo Bills star defensive lineman Tom Sestak, is comprised of a 1966 Buffalo Bills team-signed football, Sestak's 1965 Sporting News American Football League All-Star Team award, Sestak's Buffalo Bills "Team of the Sixties" presentational silver-plated ice bucket, and a 1967 AFL Championship presentational plate. Sestak was one of the most dominating defensive lineman in AFL history and a unanimous All-League selection for three consecutive years (1963-1965). During the 1960s, Sestak was one of only six defensive players to be recognized with three consecutive All-League selections. Each of those other five players is currently in the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Bob Lilly, Merlin Olsen, Willy Davis, Gino Marchetti, and Deacon Jones. Sestak also helped lead the Bills to four straight postseason appearances (1963-1966) and two consecutive AFL titles (1964 and 1965) during his seven-year career (1962-1968). AFL material is exceptionally rare. This is the first AFL Buffalo Bills team-signed football from the club's 1960 dynasty, not to mention the three personal awards, that we can ever recall seeing. 1) Spalding official AFL (Joe Foss) football signed in black marker by the following twenty-seven members of the 1966 Buffalo Bills (Eastern Division Champions): Barber, Bass, Bemiller, Burnett, Byrd, Carlton, D. Costa, P. Costa, Crockett, DeSutter, Dubenion, Dunaway, Edgerson, Ferguson, Hudson, Jacobs, Janik, King, Lamonica, Lusteg, McDole, O'Donnell, Rutkowski, Sestak, Shaw, Spikes, and Stratton. Signatures range from "6" to "8," averaging "7." The ball remains in Excellent to Mint condition, with light wear. 2) Tom Sestak's American Football League All-Star Team Award certificate presented by The Sporting News. The certificate, which is laminated upon a wood plaque with easel back, is dated "December, 1965," and has been signed in black ink by C. C. Johnson Spink, publisher of The Sporting News. The plaque (11.25 x 14 inches) displays moderate wear, including a number of small nicks, abrasions, and scratches, as well as a few small, light areas of discoloration. In Very Good condition. 3) Buffalo Bills silver-plated ice bucket presented to Tom Sestak. The ornately designed bucket features a lion head at either side to which the circular handles are attached. Engraved on the front is a Buffalo Bills helmet and the words "Buffalo Bills/Team of the Sixties/Tom Sestak." Produced by the Wilcox International Silver Co. (engraved on the bottom). Complete with its original lid. The bucket (10 inches high, with a 7-inch diameter lid) displays a moderate dent to one side and tarnishing throughout. In Very Good condition. 4) Silver-plated presentational plate given to Sestak for his participation in the 1967 AFL Championship game between the Bills and Kansas City Chiefs (won by the Chiefs). The plate (12.25 inches in diameter) is engraved "AFL/Championship Game/Buffalo Bills vs Kansas City Chiefs/January 1, 1967." Below that is the engraved logo and name of the Chrysler Corporation. "Bristol Silver Plate" engraved on the reverse. Vg-Ex, with light-to-moderate tarnishing. Total: 4 items. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,147.50
