1895 Yale and Princeton Foot Ball Game
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $948.00
The football rivalry between Yale and Princeton began in 1873 and still runs strong to this day. The rivalry was so famous during its early years that songs were written about it and McLoughlin Brothers even produced a board game based upon it. Offered here is that very game, titled The Yale and Princeton Foot Ball Game, produced by the company in 1895. The cover illustration, which is identical to that used on the company's contemporary Parlor Foot Ball Game, features a colorful game-in-progress scene, with each team dressed in its respective uniform of the day. An illustration of a young cherub-faced player appears in the lower left corner. The interior game board also features illustrated game scenes along all four borders. The game implements include both spinners, the red "foot ball" piece, seven of the eleven original blue "player" pieces, and six of the original "orange" player pieces. The instructions for the game are printed on the interior of the lid. The game (22 x 13 x 1 inches) displays light foxing and a small abrasion on the cover. There is a two-inch section missing from one of the cover's side flaps. The interior is free of any significant defects and the game, as a whole, remains in Excellent condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
