1977-1979 Willie McCovey Pro-Model Bat

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $829.50

Willie McCovey H&B block-letter (full name) model "S2" bat dating from the 1977-1979 manufacturing period. This is an outstanding example. Ideally, McCovey's uniform number ("44") is written in black marker on the end of the knob. The bat, which is not cracked, displays excellent use along its entire length, including slight grain checking on the reverse of the barrel, several ball marks and stitch impressions, blue bat-rack marks, and a light coat of pine tar on the upper handle. Further distinguishing this bat is the fact that it features a "flat knob," which was frequently ordered by McCovey during the 1970s, as noted in his Professional Bat Ordering Record on file at the Louisville factory. A small white label bearing the year "1977" in blue ink, has been taped to the base of the handle. McCovey reached his most important career milestone during the 1977-1979 time period when he recorded his 500th home run on June 30, 1978. One of the greatest sluggers of his era, McCovey led the National League in home runs on three separate occasions and retired in 1980 with 521 lifetime home runs. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1986, which was his first year of eligibility. Length: 35.3 inches. Weight: 33.7 ounces. LOA from John Taube and Vince Malta of PSA/DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $829.50
